The British Royal household has a person called a swan marker, a position going back to the 12th century when the British monarch had a right to claim any swans found swimming in open waters, unmarked. An annual census of the swans, known as swan upping, is led by the swan marker on a stretch of the River Thames. It takes five days, using a fleet of traditional rowing skiffs. Swans were once considered a delicacy by the Royals, but today the census is all about conservation and education.

Aisling brings All-Ireland cup to Brannoxtown

There was great excitement this afternoon at Brannoxtown NS when the whole Kildare Ladies All-Ireland winning team arrived at the school to show off the cup they won yesterday in Croke Park, writes Brian Byrne.

Led in by their captain Aisling Holton, a teacher at the school, the team got a rousing welcome from pupils, parents and staff.

It was the first All-Ireland cup to come to Kildare since 1965, when the county u21s brought home the silver.
